We have put 3,000 miles on the truck since its first oil change by the dealer. I plan to change every 3,000 miles with synthetic, so I have documented the steps here. Also, the PPI found that there was leaking around the oil filter adapter seal, so decided to replace that at the same time.
Selected Rotella Synthetic 5W40 as it is popular on the Disco forums
First removed fill cap
removed drain plug
Had driven the truck around so the oil was hot and flowed out nicely
changed to a Dowty washer instead of the copper crush washer. Have used these on other cars and the great thing about them is they are re-usable
Reinstalled drain plug, torquing to 24 lb ft. Then filled with oil, while checking level at dipstick.
Next up is to change the filter
Had this tool which made removal simple
The PPI listed leaking where the oil filter adapter mounts to the engine
Removed the four bolts, and pulled the adapter straight out.
Had pre-ordered the o-ring.
I didn’t realize that there is a smaller o-ring in there as well. This would have been a good time to replace that one as well. Cleaned up the sealing surface with my trusty Scotch Brite pad
Ready to re-install the adapter
Used blue threadlocker on the bolts and torqued the bolts to 10 lb ft per the workshop manual
Installed the adapter and then the filter. Added some oil to the filter, installed it hand tight. Ready to go!
There are a lot of different ideas about which oil is best. The reason I selected the Rotella T6 Diesel engine oil is that it has a higher Zinc content than gas engine oils. Our old tech, flat tappet engines can use the help that a coating of zinc provides on the metal to metal contact between the camshaft lobes and tappet. The downside of additional zinc in the oil is that it could coat the catalytic converters and reduce their effective life. Here are a couple of links to good forum discussions on the subject.
