The last thing from the PPI was the brakes. Some shuddering was noted on hard braking, but the pads had plenty of life left. Rotors needed changing out but it wasn’t urgent, so this project was on hold until last weekend.
I love the smell of new parts 🙂 Used the EBC brake kit from Atlantic British
Before anything else, I made sure I could remove the locating screws. One of heads became stripped….
….but the other three came off easily with a hand impact tool and PZ4 bit
Not sure this step is necessary, but used a center drill bit….
….to create a centered starting hole in the stripped screw
Then drilled the recommended size hole for the screw extractor I had
Use the impact wrench to get the extractor bit firmly jammed in the screw and then screwed it out.
At this point it came out with no drama
next I removed the two guide bolts and hung the caliper out of the way on the spring
To remove the caliper mount bolts required a breaker bar and 12 point socket
After it was removed, I cleaned up the surfaces that the pads slide on
Used brake cleaner to remove as much brake dust as possible
Pushed on the new rotors and used high temp anti-seize on the locating screws
attached the caliper mount using some medium threadlocker and torqued to spec
removed the brake fluid reservoir cap and used this tool to push the pistons in
placed in the new pads and remounted the caliper
Final product
Used my Mityvac to remove the brake fluid from the reservoir. Look how dark the fluid is. Its been a while since it was changed. Filled the reservoir with fresh fluid.
Starting with the front right, flushed each caliper until the fluid was clear. I used three bottles of brake fluid to get all of the old fluid out.
Will now go through the bedding in procedure. I have used EBC brakes on another car with good results. I like the dimpled versus through hole design on an SUV as gravel can get caught in the rotor holes and cause annoying squeeking as it scrapes against the rear shield (as I have found on my Z4M).
After the break in period, I will update this post with any observations on the braking performance.
